"The private tour was absolutely worth the extra money. Our guide was fantastic and knew so much about the 33 kings of Siam. Getting picked up directly from our hotel in an air-conditioned car was a lifesaver in that heat."

"Great day out, but man, the heat in April is no joke! The ruins are beautiful, especially Wat Chaiwatthanaram by the river. Just make sure you bring tons of water and sunscreen because there is zero shade."

"Seeing the Buddha head wrapped in the tree roots at Wat Mahathat was a bucket list moment for me. The group tour was well organized and the minivan was comfortable. Lunch was decent too."

"Did the coach and cruise combo. The bus ride there was standard, but taking the river cruise back to Bangkok was awesome. Seeing the temples from the water as the sun started to drop was definitely the highlight."

"Highly recommend adding the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace to your itinerary! The mix of European and Thai architecture is gorgeous. Our guide was very respectful and helped us understand the strict dress codes before we arrived."

"Solid day trip. We did a private tour and started early at 8 AM, which I totally recommend to beat the massive crowds. The reclining Buddha is massive in person. A bit of a bumpy walk on the old bricks, so wear good sneakers."

The Ayutthaya Historical Park is generally open daily from 08:00 AM to 06:00 PM. A few major sites, such as Wat Mahathat, may stay open slightly later until 06:30 PM.

It is highly recommended to start your visit right at 08:00 AM. Arriving early helps you avoid the intense midday heat and stay ahead of the large tour groups that typically arrive from Bangkok mid-morning.

Ayutthaya is located about 80 km north of Bangkok. If you are not taking a guided tour with hotel pickup, you have several options:

  • Train: Departs from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. It takes 60-90 minutes and costs between 20 THB (3rd class fan) and 261 THB (A/C).
  • Minivan: Frequent departures from Mo Chit New Van Terminal. Takes about 90 minutes and costs 70-100 THB.
  • Private Taxi: A door-to-door option from Bangkok city center taking 60-75 minutes, costing roughly 1,000 to 2,400 THB depending on your bargaining skills.
  • River Cruise: Luxury day trips depart from Bangkok River Piers, taking 3-4 hours and costing around 2,000 THB.

The most comfortable time to visit Ayutthaya is between November and February. During these months, the weather is cool and dry, making outdoor exploration much more pleasant.

Months to avoid: March to May brings extreme heat, with temperatures regularly exceeding 38°C (100°F). September and October mark the peak rainy season, which carries a high risk of river flooding that can occasionally close riverside temples like Wat Chaiwatthanaram.

Accessibility across the historical park is mixed. Popular sites like Wat Mahathat and the Reclining Buddha have relatively smooth paths and ramps that can accommodate wheelchairs and strollers.

However, many of the older ruins feature steep stairs, high curbs, and uneven brick terrain. Elderly visitors or those with limited mobility might find the walking distances and intense heat taxing. Hiring a tuk-tuk to move directly between the temple entrances is a great way to save energy.

Getting around the park independently is easy with local rentals. Bicycles can be rented for 40-60 THB per day near the train station, while a chartered tuk-tuk costs about 200-300 THB per hour.

Keep in mind that the ruins offer very little natural shade. Public toilets are available near the major temples but usually require a small fee, so keep some 10-20 THB coins handy. Food stalls and water vendors are plentiful near the entrances of the main sites.

Visitors must adhere to strict local rules to respect the religious and historical significance of the site:

  • Dress Code: Modest attire is required. Shoulders and knees must be covered. No sleeveless tops or short shorts.
  • Photography: When photographing the famous Buddha head at Wat Mahathat, you must kneel or sit so that your head is not higher than the Buddha's.
  • Prohibited Actions: Climbing on the ruins, removing rocks or artifacts, and flying drones (without a Fine Arts Department permit) are strictly forbidden.
  • Respect: Strict 'Lèse-majesté' laws apply to the monarchy, and shoes must be removed before entering any active temple chapels.

常見問題

Can I do Ayutthaya as a day trip from Bangkok?

Yes, Ayutthaya is located just 80 km north of Bangkok. Most guided tours take about 8 to 9 hours for a full-day trip, including the 1.5-hour drive each way.

What is the dress code for the Ayutthaya temples?

You must dress modestly to enter the temples. Shoulders and knees must be covered, which means sleeveless tops, tank tops, and short shorts are strictly prohibited.

Are temple entrance fees included in the tour price?

It depends on the specific tour. Many guided and private tours include the admission fees, but some budget options require you to pay the 80 THB per temple fee yourself. Always check the inclusions list.

Will we see the Buddha head in the tree roots?

Yes, almost all Ayutthaya day tours include a stop at Wat Mahathat, which is home to the famous sandstone Buddha head entwined in the roots of a Banyan tree.

Is lunch provided on these day trips?

Many full-day tours include lunch at a local restaurant, and some even offer specialized dietary options like vegan, vegetarian, or halal food upon request.

How much walking is involved?

Expect a moderate amount of walking. The ruins cover a large area with uneven brick terrain and steep stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.

Do I need to bring my passport?

While you don't generally need your passport to enter the temples, it is always a good idea to carry a copy of your ID when traveling outside of Bangkok.

Can I fly a drone to get photos of the ruins?

No, recreational drone use is strictly prohibited over the historical park. You must have prior written authorization from the Fine Arts Department and CAAT registration.

Is it safe to visit during the rainy season?

Yes, tours run rain or shine. However, heavy rains in September and October can cause localized flooding near the rivers, which may occasionally restrict access to riverside temples like Wat Chaiwatthanaram.

Do tours pick up directly from my hotel?

Private tours typically offer door-to-door pickup from your Bangkok hotel. Group tours might pick up from specific zones or require you to meet at a central location like the Rivercity pier.
